Shira Goldberg of Prestige Magazine wrote a glowing review of “The Settler.” In it she writes (translated from the Hebrew):
There’s no way you can remain apathetic to this winning novel, which I read with baited breath. Arfa’s words of great power sweep you into an a deep, emotional connection with Sarah Dakar. While it’s a political novel, anyone can relate to the plot, the pain, the loss, and the insights along the way, to the price each character pays, and to the human story told with great sensitivity.
The characters represent worlds unto themselves. Their agendas, thoughts, hopes, and desires are communicated with great honesty, and in a clear and contemporary language, that enables the reader to know and relate to them. Throughout the reading, I was able to imagine the nightclub, the home, and each and every character – right in front of my eyes in great detail, and that in my opinion is one of the foundations of a good book and the greatness of an author who knows the topic thoroughly and who knows how to communicate the heart of it superbly and with much honesty.
In many senses, Arfa presents in the book a rare peak at the right and left of the Israeli political map, and the divide that only increased since the murder of Rabin until today. She epitomizes, through the characters, the prejudices each size has to the other and gives us an example of how we can bridge the gaps – through true understanding and the learning of the beauty of the nation. אין אפשרות להישאר אדישים לרומן הכובש, אותו קראתי בנשימה עצורה. מילותיה רבות העוצמה של ארפא, סוחפות לחיבור רגשי, עמוק עם שרה דקר. זהו אומנם רומן פוליטי, אך כל אחד יכול להתחבר לעלילה, לכאב, לאובדן, להארות במהלך הדרך, למחיר המשולם על ידי כל אחת מהדמויות, ולסיפור האנושי המועבר ברגישות עצומה.
הדמויות בסיפור מציגות עולם ומלואו. האג’נדה, המחשבות, התקוות והרצונות שלהם מועברים בכנות עצומה, ובשפה רהוטה ועכשווית, שגורמת לקורא לדעת, להבין ולהזדהות איתם. במהלך הקריאה יכולתי לדמיין את המועדון, את הבית ואת כל אחת מהדמויות לנגד עיניי לפרטי פרטים, וזוהי לדעתי אחת מאבני היסוד של ספר טוב ומגדולותיה של סופרת שמכירה את הנושא על בוריו ויודעת להעביר את הליבה בכנות גדולה ובצורה מעולה.

בהרבה מובנים, ארפא מציגה בספר הצצה נדירה לשמאל והימין של המפה הפוליטית בישראל, ולקרע שהלך וגדל מאז רצח רבין ועד היום. היא משילה, דרך הדמויות, את הדעות הקדומות של כל צד כלפי האחר ומדגימה כיצד ניתן לגשר על פערים, מתוך הבנה אמיתית, ולימוד היופי של העם. זהו הסיפור האנושי של מדינת ישראל, ולדעתי ככזה הוא בבחינת ספר חובה. בימים אלו, הושק גם הקליפ “HOME” – שיר הנושא בספר שהופק בברלין ע”י מטי גבריאל המפיק הגרמני, (שזכור מהופעותיו עם אביב גפן) וג’ני קר זמרת ליווי באלבומים של ג’ניפר לופז, בריטני ספירס וסאלין דיון. הקליפ שוחרר כסינגל ראשון, כחלק מהפיכת הרומן ורב המכר לסרט פוליטי מוסיקלי.
